Booking your first golf lesson can feel like a step into the unknown, especially if it's been a while or you've never had one. Here's exactly what happens in a first lesson at AS Golf, so you know what to expect before you walk in.
Before you arrive
Bring your own clubs if you have them, and wear something comfortable. Flat trainers are fine, because the studio is indoors. If you don't have clubs yet, mention it when you book.
The Golf Lounge is on Meadow Lane in Birstall, just north of Leicester. It's a private studio, so it's just you and Andy for the hour.
1. A quick chat
The lesson starts with a conversation: how long you've played, what your typical bad shot is, what you've tried already and what you want from your golf. There's no right answer. Some people want to break 90, some want to stop slicing, and some just want to enjoy it more.
2. We film your swing
You'll warm up and hit some shots while two cameras record your swing from the front and side. Swing Catalyst lets us play it back in slow motion, side by side, so you can see what's happening rather than just hearing about it.
3. Every ball measured
At the same time, the GC Hawk launch monitor measures every shot: club path, face angle, strike, speed, launch and spin. Force plates show how you use the ground, and head tracking shows how still you stay. This is where the guesswork stops. Instead of "you're coming over the top", you'll see the numbers that explain your ball flight.
4. One thing to fix
Most golfers have several things going on, but they're usually connected to one root cause. The aim of a first lesson is to find it and give you one clear thing to work on, not ten. You'll make the change in the lesson, and you'll see the before-and-after video and data for yourself.
5. A plan to take away
After the lesson, you'll get written notes covering what we worked on, why it matters, and how to practise it. You'll also get a video voice-over of your analysis, so you can watch it back before you practise. Nobody remembers everything from an hour of coaching, and that's what the notes are for.
What happens next
There's no pressure to sign up to anything. Some people come back for single lessons, and some choose a four-hour package to make the change stick. If it's winter, the Winter Programme is the most complete option. You can compare them on the prices page.
